8-14 march ◆ creating ourselves
Many of us do not consider ourselves to be creative, but this idea is false. In this time where digital nomad meets staycation, we now spend most of the hours of the day living at work. If the thing you are known for out in the world is not classified as “creative,” or particularly if it is categorized that way, it can be a challenge to see the small ways in our daily lives that we do express creativity. The ways we choose to arrange our physical spaces, the clothes we choose, what food we choose to eat, and our choice of media to consume are all creative acts. The curation of our situation is the creation of it. This can become an overwhelming chore for those of us who consider everything! This week is an invitation to investigate where in our lives we are creating and how we choose to co-create. What would it feel like if we center beauty, pleasure, and connectedness in our choices? Our identities are not just the most prominent thing about us, but a collection of choices we make about what to do in the world and how we choose to interact with others. Don’t let the pressure of your identity collect into just one facet--try bringing the lesser-known parts to the surface.
The beginning of the week continues the productive movement forward of the past weekend. This helps, as we are probably driven to finish due to requirements, burdens, or demands. We have been tying up loose ends or cleaning up the inevitable mess of a big task in efforts to transition into a new phase. Try to do whatever can be done now and resist the urge to save it for later. The remainder of the week will be less useful for linear timelines, logical thinking, and keeping focus.
Midweek lets the floodgates open. What personal investment do we have in carrying out our plans exactly as we laid them? How much downtime did we schedule? What is the difference between abandoning a sinking ship and rolling with the punches? How much of the essential nature of something is lost when its form changes? These questions might seem impractical or too philosophical, but that is the nature of the rest of this week. We are reminded that our identities are multivalent. We are not defined by one aspect of ourselves, nor are we defined by ourselves, as we live in the context of others, communities, and cultures.
Our week ends with an opening. The latter half of this week is not well suited to rational or straight-forward approaches, so allowing the daydreams and wandering attention to happen is a better method than gripping tightly or expecting precision. Try to release and loosen into the challenges that arise now. Why punch at the ocean? If we can access our creativity this weekend, it may lead us down the rabbit hole but open up new avenues unreachable by the direct route. Try to dream up a sensual (broadly: our five senses) experience that provides a spiritual encounter to connect to something bigger than ourselves. If that is not the thing, explore what knowledge the physical body has about pleasure. How do we access pleasure in our bodies, and what feelings do these sensations bring to us? Joy? Guilt? Comfort? Shame? Engage with the autonomy of your access to pleasure.
